Apple HomeView

Apple HomeView is a $299 home hub with a 7-inch screen, and it is the first genuinely new Apple product category in years. It handles entertainment, FaceTime, camera feeds and smart home control from one aluminium slab.

There are two versions, a tabletop model and a wall-mounted one, both at the same price. It reaches stores on November 13.

A Hub That Knows Who Is Standing There

HomeView recognises up to six people by face and changes what it shows for each of them. Siri AI is the interface, with broad world knowledge, onscreen awareness and personal context pulled from a paired iPhone or iPad.

The screen is a 7-inch Liquid Retina panel with True Tone, and it dims from 500 nits all the way down to 0.3 nits so it can sit in a bedroom. An A18 chip drives it, with Secure Exclaves handling camera and microphone data.

Audio is the surprise. Two full-range drivers sit behind the display, with a down-firing woofer and two force-cancelling passive radiators in the base. The wall-mounted version drops the woofer.

Should You Buy Apple HomeView?

HomeView makes sense if you already run Apple cameras, locks and thermostats, because it turns a phone-first system into something anyone in the house can use without unlocking anything. Matter accessories work alongside it, so it is not a closed set.

It makes much less sense as a first purchase. The hub is worth $299 once there is something to control, and the Apple Home Collection accessories it was designed around do not ship until December. Our guide to Siri commands covers the voice side, and the HomePod mini 2 is the cheaper way in.

  • Buy it if: you already have HomeKit cameras and locks running
  • Wait if: you are starting from nothing, since the accessories arrive in December
  • Cannot buy it if: you are in the European Union, where it is not sold
