Best Minecraft Enchantments: A Loadout for Every Item

Best Minecraft Enchantments title card

The best Minecraft enchantments depend on what is in your hand, because the strongest options often refuse to share an item. A sword has to choose a damage type, a bow has to choose between Infinity and Mending, and boots have to choose between swimming and ice. What follows is a realistic loadout for every item: a core set you always take, and one pick from each choice that rules another out.

Not everything on those lists comes from an enchanting table. Sharpness V, Thorns III and Quick Charge III cannot, and seven treasure enchantments never appear there at all. Every recommendation here is checked against Java Edition 26.3 as of 5 November 2026, and it includes the mace and spear enchantments that older guides leave out. Minecraft belongs on any list of the best open world games, but its enchanting rules are far more tangled than most.

The Best Minecraft Enchantments to Chase First

If you only get five books, take them in this order. Each one applies to a wide range of items, which is why they head every loadout further down.

  1. Mending. It repairs an item with the experience you collect, at 2 points of durability per point of experience. It cannot be rolled at a table and has to be found or bought.
  2. Unbreaking III. Tools skip durability loss 75% of the time and armor 30% of the time at level III. It fits nearly everything that wears out.
  3. Protection IV. Each piece cuts 16% of incoming damage, 64% across four pieces, with an overall cap of 80%.
  4. Efficiency V. The mining speed that makes every other tool enchantment worth having. Fortune III or Silk Touch comes second.
  5. Sharpness V. Java damage goes up by 3 at level V. It is also the hardest of the five to get from a table, as the table further down shows.

Armor Loadouts, Piece by Piece

Every piece starts with Protection IV, Unbreaking III and Mending. What differs is the single extra choice each slot offers.

ItemCore set (always take)Pick oneOptional extras
HelmetProtection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending, Respiration III, Aqua AffinitySwap Protection IV for Blast Protection IV (creepers, end crystals) or Fire Protection IV (Nether)Thorns
ChestplateProtection IV, Unbreaking III, MendingSwap Protection IV for Blast or Fire Protection IVThorns
LeggingsProtection IV, Unbreaking III, MendingSwap Protection IV for Blast or Fire Protection IVSwift Sneak III for sculk and warden stealth, Thorns
BootsProtection IV, Feather Falling IV, Unbreaking III, MendingDepth Strider III or Frost Walker IISoul Speed III, Thorns

The four protection types exclude each other on one piece, but not across pieces. Putting Blast Protection IV on a chestplate while the rest of the set carries Protection IV is allowed, and some players keep a second set for the Nether with Fire Protection IV.

Feather Falling IV is the awkward one. At table level 30 it lands on diamond boots only 2.7% of the time, and better odds come at table levels 22 to 26. Buying the book from a librarian is usually quicker. Soul Speed III, by contrast, wears boots down faster, so it suits a dedicated Nether pair and not your everyday set.

Weapon Loadouts: Sword, Mace, Spear, Bow, Crossbow and Trident

ItemCore set (always take)Pick oneOptional extras
SwordUnbreaking III, Mending, Looting III, Sweeping Edge III (Java only)Sharpness V, Smite V or Bane of Arthropods VFire Aspect II, Knockback II
MaceUnbreaking III, MendingDensity V, Breach IV or Smite VWind Burst III
SpearUnbreaking III, Mending, Looting IIISharpness V or Smite VLunge III, Fire Aspect II, Knockback II
BowPower V, Unbreaking IIIInfinity or MendingPunch II, Flame
CrossbowQuick Charge III, Unbreaking III, MendingPiercing IV or MultishotNone
TridentUnbreaking III, Mending, Impaling VLoyalty III with Channeling I, or Riptide III on its ownNone

The mace is the loadout that changed most recently. Density V adds 0.5 damage per fallen block per level to a smash attack, Breach IV ignores 60% of the target armor, and Smite V suits undead farms. Wind Burst III launches you back up after a smash so you can chain hits, but it only drops from ominous vaults at level I, so levels II and III are built on an anvil.

The spear is newer still. Lunge III throws you forward on each jab at a cost of 1 to 3 hunger points and 1 point of durability, which changes how the weapon plays enough that it works better as a movement tool than as your main sword. It combines with Mending, so it does not force a trade-off on durability.

  • Bow: Infinity or Mending. Infinity stops normal arrows being used up and lets the bow wear out. Mending keeps the bow alive forever but spends arrows. Spectral and tipped arrows are consumed either way.
  • Crossbow: Piercing or Multishot. Piercing IV passes arrows through four mobs and lets you pick them up again. Multishot fires three arrows in a spread. Quick Charge III takes loading from 1.25 seconds to 0.5.
  • Trident: thrown or ridden. Loyalty III returns the trident and Channeling adds lightning in a thunderstorm. Riptide III launches you through water or rain and excludes both of the others.
  • Sword and axe: one damage type. Sharpness V for general fighting, Smite V against undead, Bane of Arthropods V against spiders. In Java the damage enchantments on an axe come from an anvil, not a table.

Tool and Utility Loadouts

Tools are the simplest items to plan, because almost every one wants Efficiency V, Unbreaking III and Mending and then a single choice between Fortune III and Silk Touch.

ItemCore set (always take)Pick oneOptional extras
PickaxeEfficiency V, Unbreaking III, MendingFortune III for ores, or Silk Touch for ender chests, ice and stoneCarry one of each
Axe for choppingEfficiency V, Unbreaking III, MendingSilk Touch for melons, bookshelves, beehives and leaves, or Fortune IIINone
ShovelEfficiency V, Unbreaking III, MendingSilk Touch or Fortune IIINone
HoeEfficiency V, Unbreaking III, MendingSilk Touch for leaves and sculk, or Fortune III for crops, apples and saplingsNone
Fishing rodLuck of the Sea III, Lure III, MendingNoneUnbreaking III
ShearsEfficiency V, Unbreaking III, MendingNoneNone
ElytraUnbreaking III, MendingNoneNever Curse of Binding
ShieldUnbreaking III, MendingNoneNone

Most players carry two pickaxes, one with Fortune III and one with Silk Touch, because the two enchantments cannot share a tool. Fishing rods can skip Unbreaking, since Mending alone repairs more than fishing wears away. An elytra without Mending can only be repaired with phantom membranes or a second elytra, which makes Mending the one enchantment worth hunting for before anything else on it.

What an Enchanting Table Alone Cannot Give You

A level 30 result is the best a table can show, but it guarantees nothing about which enchantments you get. A level 30 offer can still produce Fortune II or Efficiency III on its own. Several top levels are out of reach on certain materials, and seven enchantments are never offered at all.

EnchantmentWhy a table cannot give itWhere it comes from
Sharpness VOnly golden tools can roll level V at a tableA book from a librarian or loot, or a golden sword
Thorns IIINo armor piece can roll level III at a tableA book from a librarian or loot
Quick Charge IIIThe table stops at level IIA book from a librarian or loot
Efficiency VStone and diamond tools cap at IV at a tableA book from a librarian or loot. Other tiers can roll V
MendingTreasure, never offered by a tableStructure loot, fishing and librarian villagers
Frost WalkerTreasureJungle temple and stronghold chests, fishing, librarians
Soul SpeedTreasureBastion remnant chests and piglin bartering
Swift SneakTreasureAncient city chests
Wind BurstTreasureOminous vaults in trial chambers, level I only
Curse of Binding and Curse of VanishingTreasureFishing, librarians and structure loot. Neither is worth wanting

The difference between gold and diamond comes down to enchantability. Golden tools score 22 and golden armor 25, while diamond scores 10, iron armor 9 and stone 5. A higher score pushes the hidden modified level up, which is how a golden sword reaches Sharpness V and a diamond one does not.

Getting to Level 30 on the Table

Fifteen bookshelves is the number that matters. With 15 in place the third option is level 30, the middle one is between 6 and 21, and the top one is between 2 and 10. A 16th shelf adds nothing. You must hold the full 30 levels to pick the third slot but you are charged only 3 levels and 3 lapis lazuli.

  • Distance. Each shelf sits exactly 2 blocks from the table along one horizontal axis and 0 to 2 blocks along the other, at table height or one block above.
  • Clear gap. The block between table and shelf has to be air or something replaceable, like snow layers or short grass. A torch or any solid block breaks the link.
  • Only bookshelves count. In Java 26.3 a chiseled bookshelf provides nothing.
  • A simple layout. A one-block-tall ring around the table with a single gap on one side reaches 15 shelves.

Treasure Enchantments: Villagers, Loot and Fishing

Seven enchantments never come from a table, from gear sold by villagers or from mob equipment. Librarians sell the books for most of them, and the price is the part to plan around.

  • Librarian prices. A book costs 2 + 3 per level up to 6 + 13 per level in emeralds, doubled for treasure enchantments and capped at 64. Mending, at level I, runs 10 to 38 emeralds. Sharpness V runs 17 to 64.
  • Discounts. Hero of the Village cuts 30% plus 6.25% per extra level, and curing a zombie villager gives a permanent discount. Repeated buying raises the price, and trades restock up to twice a day.
  • What librarians will not sell. Soul Speed, Swift Sneak and Wind Burst. Those come from bastion chests and piglin bartering, ancient city chests and ominous vaults.
  • Pre-enchanted gear. Armorers, weaponsmiths, toolsmiths, fishermen and fletchers sell enchanted items with non-treasure enchantments only.

Fishing is the slow route. Mending, Frost Walker and both curses can all turn up as treasure catches, and Luck of the Sea III raises the share of treasure by about 2.1 percentage points per level. If you would rather skip the hunt while testing a build, the Minecraft commands cover how to apply enchantments directly. Modded enchantments fall outside the 43 counted here, and the mods worth installing are a separate list.

Building Books on the Anvil Without Hitting Too Expensive

The anvil is where the real loadouts get built, and the cost climbs quickly. Each time an item goes through an anvil its prior-work penalty doubles, running 0, 1, 3, 7, 15 and 31 for uses zero to five. In survival the anvil refuses any single operation that would cost 40 levels or more, no matter how many levels you hold.

  • Combine books in pairs. When two items merge, only the higher penalty carries over, so joining books of equal penalty keeps the total low.
  • Pay for the costly enchantment rarely. In Java a sacrifice item charges by enchantment: Protection, Sharpness, Efficiency and Power cost 1 per level, while Thorns, Soul Speed, Infinity and the curses cost 8. A book pays roughly half.
  • Expect a large total. A seven-enchantment set of boots costs 66 levels at the cheapest ordering and 68 in plain pairing order, spread over several anvil uses.
  • Use a grindstone to reset. It strips every enchantment except curses, refunds some experience and resets the penalty to zero. It cannot add anything.

An anvil also takes damage. Each use has a 12% chance of moving it from anvil to chipped, chipped to damaged and damaged to destroyed, so keep a spare close when you build a long chain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best enchantment in Minecraft?

Mending is the best single enchantment, because it repairs an item for as long as you keep collecting experience. Unbreaking III comes next, since it cuts tool wear by up to 75%, and Protection IV is the best armor enchantment.

Should a bow have Infinity or Mending?

A bow cannot carry both, so it comes down to what you run out of first. Infinity saves arrows and lets the bow wear out, while Mending keeps the bow indefinitely and spends arrows. Mending suits players who can craft arrows cheaply, and Infinity suits those who rarely have any.

Can you put Sharpness and Smite on the same sword?

No. Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Breach and Density form a single group, and an item can hold only one of them. Pick Sharpness V for general fighting and keep a Smite V sword or axe for undead.

Why does the enchanting table never offer Mending?

Mending is a treasure enchantment, and a table never offers those. It comes from librarian villagers, fishing and structure loot, so the quickest route is usually a villager trade at 10 to 38 emeralds for the level I book.
