Fortnite Festival for Rock Band Fans: Lanes and Pro Parts

Fortnite Festival for Rock Band Fans title card

This Fortnite Festival Rock Band guide is for players who know Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Harmonix, the studio behind both, built the mode, and it plays the way veterans expect: notes fall down a highway and you hit them on the beat. It covers lanes, scoring, the Pro parts, and the hardware that is and is not confirmed.

Two things differ from the plastic-instrument era. The game is free, and every song is a Jam Track that doubles as a cosmetic elsewhere in Fortnite. The mode also lost its competitive playlist, so Main Stage and Jam Stage are the only two left.

Fortnite Festival Rock Band Heritage: What Carries Over From Harmonix

Alex Rigopulos and Eran Egozy founded Harmonix in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1995. The studio’s lineage explains most of what Festival feels like, from the strum charts to the mashup toy mode.

Fortnite Festival9 December 2023Harmonix under Epic Games, which bought the studio in November 2021

Epic bought Harmonix in November 2021, and Festival launched on 9 December 2023 with Chapter 5 Season 1. The studio’s stated aim was a free rhythm game for millions of Fortnite players, with a library that could grow quickly. The library now holds more than 700 Jam Tracks.

Four Lanes on Easy to Hard and Five on Expert

Festival has four difficulties. Easy, Medium and Hard use four lanes, and Expert adds a fifth. Anyone who learned the Rock Band guitar on Expert will find the five-lane layout familiar, and anyone stepping down to Hard will find one lane missing.

DifficultyLanesWhat changes
EasyFourFewest notes per bar
MediumFourMore chords and faster runs
HardFourDense charts on the same four lanes
ExpertFiveThe only difficulty with a fifth lane, and the one that earns gold stars

On a keyboard the default keys for the four-lane charts are D, F, J and K. You can remap them in Settings, which has been possible since Chapter 5 Season 2. The highway itself has run at 120 frames per second since August 2024, so fast Expert runs stay readable on a high-refresh screen. A good gaming monitor is worth pairing with it if you play at that speed.

How a Note Is Judged: Sustains, Lifts and Timing

Each note descends towards a target line, and you press the matching button as it crosses. Three note types appear.

  • Tap notes are a single press on the beat.
  • Sustains must be held for their length. Letting go early is not counted as a miss, but pressing again afterwards is a strike.
  • Lifts appear as an arrow and are played by releasing the button rather than pressing it.

Timing settings have grown since launch. The “Good” judgement and early or late indicators arrived on 26 August 2025 along with connectors for lift notes, and a note-streak counter followed on 29 November 2025. Players who find the default window loose can turn these on and tighten their own habits.

Overdrive, Stars and Band Stars

Festival scores in the way Rock Band did, with a multiplier that climbs on streaks and a star rating at the end. The table lists what each element does.

ElementWhat it does
TimingCloser to the beat scores more. Since 26 August 2025 a “Good” judgement with early and late indicators is available in settings
Missed notesNo points are lost, but your multiplier resets
StreaksGlowing notes fill the Overdrive meter, a quarter for each completed string
OverdriveDoubles your personal multiplier, and the band multiplier climbs when several players use it together
StarsUp to five per song, split into personal stars and band stars, with gold stars on Expert

The split between personal stars and band stars is the biggest change from the older games. Your own playing earns the first kind, and everyone on stage earns the second. Leaderboards are kept per song and per instrument and reset each season, although all-time boards came back on 18 June 2025.

Every Instrument and Difficulty in Fortnite Festival

Four standard parts exist: Lead, Bass, Drums and Tap Vocals. Each has a Pro counterpart. Instrumentals have no Karaoke chart, since there is nothing to sing.

Standard partPro versionPro version addedWhat the Pro version needs
LeadPro LeadApril 2024Plastic guitar, keyboard or gamepad
BassPro BassApril 2024Plastic guitar, keyboard or gamepad
DrumsPro Drums, with optional cymbals16 April 2026Rock Band 4 kit or compatible MIDI kit; PC and console
Tap VocalsKaraoke16 April 2026Any microphone that works in Fortnite; PC and console, mobile from 25 June 2026

Pro parts only show once you switch on “Always Display Pro Parts” in Settings. A song can also be played by up to four people on one PlayStation or Xbox console since January 2025, with each player on their own Epic account. Each person chooses their own instrument and difficulty, so a Hard drummer and an Expert bassist can share a stage.

Pro Lead and Pro Bass: Strums and Hammer-Ons

Pro Lead and Pro Bass arrived in April 2024 with Season 3. The charts add strum notes and hammer-on and pull-off notes, known as HOPOs. Each has its own leaderboard, separate from the standard part.

Plastic guitars are supported for these parts. Since 24 May 2024 players without a guitar can also play the Pro parts on a keyboard or gamepad, so the Pro charts are not locked behind hardware. For a first attempt, play a song you know well on Hard, since knowing the riff makes the strum pattern easy to read.

Pro Drums, Cymbals and Karaoke Arrived in April 2026

Season 14 on 16 April 2026 added the two biggest instrument features since the Pro guitars. Pro Drums has its own highway with lanes and kick gems. Turning on cymbals moves you to a separate “Pro Drums + Cymbals” leaderboard.

Epic names a Rock Band 4 drum kit or a compatible MIDI kit as the hardware. Support for a double-bass pedal followed on 6 June 2026. Pro Drums is for PC and console only, and the 1 November 2026 patch notes list a known issue where striking two cymbal gems at once can break a streak.

Karaoke is the vocal counterpart. It launched on 16 April 2026 as Mic Vocals and was renamed Karaoke on 24 April, and the standard vocal part became Tap Vocals. It grades pitch and timing against blue pitch lines. Any microphone that works in Fortnite will do, and a headset microphone is the simplest route: see the best gaming headsets for options. Karaoke reached mobile on 25 June 2026.

Which Guitars, Drum Kits and Mics Are Confirmed

The verified list is short. Controller support for guitars launched in April 2024, and Epic named the drum and microphone requirements when it released those parts in April 2026.

HardwareUsed forStatus
PDP Riffmaster wireless guitarGuitarConfirmed at the April 2024 guitar controller launch, PlayStation and Xbox or PC versions

Rock Band 4 drum kitPro DrumsNamed by Epic for the 16 April 2026 release
MIDI drum kitPro DrumsNamed by Epic as compatible, with no list of models
MicrophoneKaraokeAny microphone that works in Fortnite on PC and console

Third-party hardware has appeared since. CRKD, for example, has announced guitars and attachments for rhythm games from November 2024 onwards. None of that is part of the verified launch list above, so check Epic’s compatibility table for your platform before buying anything. Xbox One Rock Band 4 guitars need the Xbox Wireless Adapter when used on PC.

If you own none of this hardware, Main Stage still plays on a standard controller, a keyboard or a phone. Platform matters for the extras, since Pro Drums and Karaoke with a microphone need a PC or a console, such as those in our guide to the best gaming consoles.

Mobile players got a portrait Main Stage on 19 March 2026 in update 40.00. You tap the highway directly, with no on-screen gamepad. Update 43.00 on 1 November 2026 made the mobile Main Stage portrait from start to finish.

Phones have limits. Pro Drums is PC and console only, so a phone cannot run it. Karaoke is the one new part that reached mobile. For other options on a handset, our list of the best mobile games covers what else is worth installing.

What Songs and the Music Pass Cost for a Newcomer

The costs are small if you stay in the free rotation. Up to 40 Jam Tracks are free to play at any time and the set refreshes daily. A track you want to keep costs 500 V-Bucks and stays in your Locker permanently.

The Music Pass, which was called the Festival Pass until 2 November 2024, costs 1,200 V-Bucks, down from 1,400. It is included with Fortnite Crew. The live pass is Season 15, Neon Dreams with Lil Tecca, and the next Music Pass is due on 12 November 2026. Epic has said it will be smaller than a normal one.

Festival has two playlists today. Main Stage is the score chase described above. Jam Stage is the mixing mode, where each player plays one stem of a track. Battle Stage, the 16-player elimination mode, was removed on 16 April 2026.
