Fortnite Ranked: How Your Rank Moves and What Resets

Fortnite ranked is a toggle rather than a playlist. You switch it on above the Play button in mode selection, and the same queue you already use starts counting towards a rank. What it counts is not obvious, because placement, eliminations and the skill of the people you beat all feed the same progress bar at different weights.

The short version is that surviving late is worth far more than killing early. Below is what moves the bar, which queues share a ladder with which, and exactly what a season reset takes away from you and what it quietly keeps.

Where Fortnite Ranked Lives and How to Switch It On

Open mode selection and the ranked toggle sits directly above the Play button. Turning it on greys out team fill, so you cannot be matched with strangers to complete a squad. Everything else about the queue stays the same.

  • New accounts have to unlock it. Finish the quest to outlast 500 players and the toggle appears. Once unlocked it stays unlocked permanently.
  • There is no account level requirement. No source states a minimum level or a security requirement for ranked itself, though two-factor authentication is worth switching on before you invest a season in an account.
  • Crossplay stays on by default. It lives in the same settings menu, and turning crossplay off narrows your pool rather than removing console opponents entirely.
  • There are no placement matches. One ranked match reveals your rank, because the game already holds a hidden rating for your account.

The Five Things That Move Your Rank

Epic publishes the inputs but never the point values, so no guide can honestly tell you a placement is worth a fixed number. What it does state plainly is that late-game performance carries significantly more weight than early-game actions.

InputWeightWhat that means in a match
Final placementHighThe jump from 2nd to 1st counts for far more than 50th to 45th
EliminationsHigh late, low earlyA knock with 20 players left pays considerably more than one with 80 left
Opponent skillMediumBeating a Diamond while you sit in Gold pays more than a Bronze
Damage dealt against damage takenMediumDamage to a player a team-mate finishes is shared across the squad
Storm circle reachedHighCircle 8 in 5th place typically beats circle 5 in 2nd place

Two modifiers sit on top. Consistent results earn a bonus, and repeatedly dying in the first circle is penalised more heavily than one bad game. Your first ranked match of each day cannot reduce your progress at all, and that protection resets at midnight UTC.

Why Late Game Beats Early Kills

The weighting changes how a ranked match should be played, and it is the single biggest difference between a casual drop and a ranked one.

  • Dropping hot costs you. Three kills in the first minute move the bar less than reaching the eighth circle quietly.
  • Fifth place can beat second place. Reaching circle 8 in 5th typically scores above reaching circle 5 in 2nd, because the circle you survived into is counted separately from your finishing position.
  • Who you beat matters. The rank of your victim is folded into the score, so a Gold player eliminating a Diamond is rewarded well above the same kill on a Bronze.
  • Damage is shared. Chip damage on an opponent your team-mate finishes still counts for you, so committing to a fight you do not personally close is not wasted.

The practical result is that rotation beats aggression in ranked, which is the opposite of what works in casual lobbies. The current season also scatters override sprites across the island, and the movement ones change rotations more than any weapon does.

The Eight Tiers at a Glance

There are eight tiers and 22 distinct ranks. Every tier except Unreal is split into three divisions numbered I, II and III, and the numerals count upwards, so Bronze III beats Bronze I and promotes into Silver I.

TierDivisionsShare of playersWhat it signals
BronzeI, II, III47.4%Where almost half of all accounts stop
SilverI, II, III20.0%Silver I is the median player
GoldI, II, III7.7%The quickest tier to pass through
PlatinumI, II, III8.8%Platinum I is the top quarter
DiamondI, II, III6.1%The last tier before lobbies turn serious
EliteI, II, III5.7%Elite I is the top tenth
ChampionI, II, III2.7%Three divisions since April 2026
UnrealNone1.7%A leaderboard position instead of a division

Elite and Champion only gained divisions in update v40.20 on 16 April 2026. Before that they were single ranks and the ladder was 18 steps rather than 22, which is why older guides and older screenshots disagree with what you see in game.

Playing Ranked in a Party

Queueing with friends does not average your ranks. The lobby is built around the highest-ranked player in the party, so the whole group plays at the level of its strongest member.

  • Everyone shares team placement and team eliminations. The squad rises and falls together on the match result.
  • Each account keeps its own rank. Carrying a lower-ranked friend does not drag your badge down.
  • The lower-ranked player gains more. Beating higher-ranked opponents is worth more, and in a stacked lobby that is every opponent.

The cost is the lobby difficulty, not the rank itself. A Bronze player dragged into a Champion lobby will not lose their Bronze badge, but they will spend the match being outplayed by people several tiers above them.

Which Queues Share a Ladder

Four queues currently feed two ladders, and one standalone mode runs a third. Nothing crosses between them, so a climb in one does not show up in another.

QueueLadderReset
Battle Royale and Zero BuildOne shared ladderResets at the end of each Battle Royale season
Reload and Reload Zero BuildOne shared ladder, separate from Battle RoyaleResets on its own schedule
Arenas BoxfightsIts own ladderResets on its own schedule
Fortnite OG, Ballistic, Rocket RacingNo ranked ladder any moreRanked play for these has ended

Battle Royale and Zero Build stopped being separate in March 2026. Before then a player held two different badges, and a lot of older material still describes it that way. Reload and Reload Zero Build merged in the following month and keep their own ladder, which resets on a schedule of its own rather than following the Battle Royale season.

What a Season Reset Keeps and What It Wipes

A reset is partial. The badge you spent a season earning goes away, but the hidden rating underneath it does not, which is why your first match back is never an easy one.

  • Wiped: the badge. Everyone starts unranked and reveals a new rank after one match.
  • Kept: your Skill Rating. Matchmaking still knows your real level, which is why there are no placement matches to grind.
  • Kept for events: your previous rank. Epic uses whichever of your current and previous rank is higher when it checks tournament eligibility.
  • Kept: the Axe of Unreal. Reaching Unreal again in a later season unlocks the next stage of the pickaxe instead of restarting it.

Ranked rewards are cosmetic and handed out through quests that refresh every match. There are no V-Bucks anywhere in ranked, and support staff cannot adjust a rank under any circumstances, so there is nothing to appeal after a bad run.

Unreal, the Leaderboard and Unreal Legends

Unreal replaces the progress bar with a numbered position on a global leaderboard, and it cannot be lost once reached. Your position still moves, because it changes every time anyone above or below you finishes a match.

Unreal Legend sits above it as a status rather than a 23rd rank. It needs all three of these at the same time, in the same season:

  • Unreal itself. The leaderboard place is the entry requirement.
  • A Skill Rating of 2,500 or more. This is the only Skill Rating number Epic has ever published.
  • A place in the top 500. Other players climbing past you can remove it without you playing at all.

Lose any one of the three and the Legend status goes while Unreal stays. If you would rather not be listed at all, switching off public game stats hides your position.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you turn on ranked in Fortnite?

Open mode selection and use the ranked toggle above the Play button. New accounts first have to finish the quest to outlast 500 players, after which the toggle stays available.

Do eliminations or placement matter more in Fortnite ranked?

Both count, but when they happen matters more than which they are. A kill late in a match and a deep circle are each worth far more than an early elimination.

Does Fortnite ranked reset every season?

The badge resets each season. The hidden Skill Rating behind it carries over, so matchmaking places you at your real level from the first match of the new season.

Can you lose your rank in Fortnite?

Yes, below Unreal. Your progress bar falling to zero drops you back one division. Unreal cannot be lost inside a season, and your first match each day cannot cost you progress.
