Minecraft mobs by dimension is the most useful way to look them up, because a mob’s address decides almost everything about it. Most of the 88 mobs in Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.60 live in the Overworld, a small group belongs to the Nether, and the End hosts only a handful.
Whether a mob appears at all depends on three rules: a light-level test, a mob cap that limits how many can exist, and a despawn check. This guide covers each dimension in turn, then the rules that apply everywhere, then the mobs that hit hardest and the ones that are hardest to find.
Minecraft Mobs by Dimension: Where Each One Lives
Each dimension runs on its own spawning rules, and the numbers differ in each.
| Dimension | What lets a monster spawn | Typical residents |
|---|---|---|
| Overworld | Block light 0, and a random 0-7 sky roll that must pass (Java) | Zombie, Skeleton, Creeper, Spider, Witch, every farm animal, every ocean mob |
| The Nether | Light level 7 or less | Piglin, Hoglin, Ghast, Blaze, Magma Cube, Strider, Wither Skeleton |
| The End | Block light 0, with the sky-light threshold set to 15 | Enderman, Shulker, the Ender Dragon |
Some mobs cross over. The Enderman turns up in all three dimensions, and the Skeleton appears in the Overworld and the Nether. In the sections below each mob is described in the dimension where it is most at home.
The Light Rule That Decides Whether a Monster Spawns
For Overworld monsters, block light must be exactly 0. On top of that, each spawn attempt rolls a random number from 0 to 7, and the spawn succeeds only if the sky-light value is at or below it. That rule arrived in Java 1.18 on 30 November 2021 and replaced the old “light level 7 or less from any source” test. Torches and other light sources stop spawns because they raise block light above 0.
Thunderstorms treat the sky as if it were 10 levels darker, which is why Husks, Parched and Zombie Horses can appear in daylight during one. Mobs also never spawn within 24 blocks of a player, and only inside a 128-block sphere around one. A hostile mob needs a two-block-tall space with a solid surface below it.
A page that says “light level 0” is shorthand for the block-light half of that rule. A handful of mobs follow different numbers:
| Mob | Spawn condition |
|---|---|
| Bat | Light 3 or less in Java, 4 or less in Bedrock, on stone-type blocks |
| Slime in swamps | Light 7 or less at Y 51-69, best at full moon |
| Slime in slime chunks | Below Y=40, any light; about 1 chunk in 10 |
| Ghast, Magma Cube, Hoglin | Any light level |
| Sulfur Cube | Any light level, in sulfur caves |
| Creaking | Ignores light and follows the night cycle |
| Cows, sheep, pigs, chickens | A spawn block with light 9 or more in Java, 7 or more in Bedrock |
Peaceful difficulty removes hostile mobs everywhere, with four exceptions: Hoglins, Piglins, Shulkers and Sulfur Cubes stay. The spawnMonsters game rule, added in Java 1.21.9, switches natural monster spawning off on any difficulty, and a command is all it takes: see the Minecraft commands list.
Mob Caps and Why a Busy Area Stops Spawning
Every spawn category has a cap, and when a category is full no more of that kind appear naturally. The Java base values are shown below. The global cap scales as the base value times loaded chunks, divided by 289, and a separate per-player cap applies as well.
| Category | Base cap in Java | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Monster | 70 | Zombie, Skeleton, Creeper and the other hostile mobs |
| Creature | 10 | Land animals such as cows and sheep |
| Ambient | 15 | Bats |
| Water ambient | 20 | Cod, salmon, tropical fish |
| Water creature | 5 | Dolphin, Nautilus, Squid |
| Underground water creature | 5 | Glow Squid |
| Axolotl | 5 | Axolotl |
| Miscellaneous | None | Golems, Villagers |
Mobs that are persistent do not count toward the cap. Spawn eggs, spawners, breeding and summon commands ignore it entirely. Bedrock works differently, using a global cap of 200.
Overworld Surface Mobs by Biome

The Overworld surface is where most of the passive mobs live, and the biome decides which ones. The table lists what each habitat produces. Biome lists below follow the current release only.
| Habitat | Mobs | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Grass biomes and villages | Cow, Sheep, Pig, Chicken | Pigs avoid snowy plains, meadow, mangrove swamp and pale garden |
| Plains and savanna | Horse, Donkey, Zombie Horse | The Zombie Horse appears at night and in thunderstorms, carrying a zombie horseman |
| Badlands and savanna | Armadillo | Badlands, eroded badlands, wooded badlands, savanna, savanna plateau, windswept savanna |
| Desert | Camel, Husk, Parched, Camel Husk, Rabbit | Husks and Parched spawn at night or in thunderstorms; the Camel Husk arrives as a jockey |
| Snow and ice | Polar Bear, Stray, Rabbit, Goat | Strays spawn in snowy plains and ice spikes at night; goats live on peaks and slopes |
| Forest and taiga | Wolf, Fox | Wolves also use grove, snowy taiga and wooded badlands |
| Jungle | Ocelot, Parrot, Panda | Jungle and bamboo jungle; Bedrock adds sparse jungle |
| Swamp | Frog, Slime, Bogged, Witch | Slimes need light 7 or less at Y 51-69; Bogged spawn at light 0 |
| Windswept hills | Llama | Windswept hills, forest and gravelly hills, plus savanna plateau |
| Meadow | Bee | Meadow gives 100% of tree spawns a bee nest |
| Mushroom fields | Mooshroom | Mushroom fields is the biome where they spawn |
| Pale garden | Creaking | Needs an activated creaking heart, and it comes out at night |
Villages add the Villager, the Iron Golem and the Cat to whichever biome they sit in. Cats also spawn in swamp huts as black cats. For other games built around exploring a large world, see our open world games list.
Ocean, River and Underwater Mobs
Water holds a separate group of mobs, and most of it is harmless. Squid spawn in oceans and rivers, Salmon in rivers and cold oceans, and Cod across most oceans. Tropical Fish and Pufferfish stay in the lukewarm and warm ones.
- Dolphin and Drowned. Dolphins use lukewarm, warm and regular oceans. Drowned spawn in rivers and oceans, in dripstone caves and at ocean ruins.
- Nautilus and Zombie Nautilus. Both are ocean mobs added on 9 December 2025. The Zombie Nautilus appears as the mount of a Drowned holding a trident, and at ocean ruins.
- Glow Squid. Found in total darkness below Y=30, in groups of 4-6 in Java.
- Turtle. Spawns on beaches and hatches from eggs.
- Guardians. Restricted to ocean monuments, covered under structures below.
Water mobs have their own caps. Squid, Dolphins and Nautilus share a base cap of 5, and fish have a separate pool of 20.
Cave, Deep Dark and Sulfur Cave Mobs
Underground the usual monsters spawn in the dark, but caves add their own residents. Bats gather in groups of 8 on stone not exposed to the sky, Axolotls live in lush caves where water has clay within 5 blocks below, and Tropical Fish also appear there.
Sulfur caves belong to the newest mob. The Sulfur Cube spawns there at any light level and a large one splits into two small ones when killed, while Cave Spiders spawn there too. The deep dark is the opposite extreme. The Warden arrives only when a sculk shrieker issues its fourth warning, so it is a consequence of your behaviour rather than a normal spawn.
Structure-Only Mobs and Where They Come From

A group of mobs is tied to structures and cannot be found in the open world. Several are placed once when the structure generates and never come back, which makes them a finite resource in a given world.
| Structure | Mobs | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Trial chambers | Breeze, Bogged, Stray, Husk, Spider, Cave Spider, Silverfish | Through trial spawners; the Breeze appears nowhere else |
| Ocean monument | Guardian, Elder Guardian | Exactly three Elder Guardians, placed when the monument generates |
| Woodland mansion | Evoker, Vindicator, Allay | Allays sit in cells with a 50% chance, in groups of 1-3 |
| Pillager outpost | Pillager, Allay, Iron Golem | Allays are held in cages; golems appear at generation |
| Ancient city | Warden | Summoned by a sculk shrieker on its fourth warning |
| Stronghold and igloo | Silverfish | Igloo basements also hold a Villager |
| Mineshaft | Cave Spider | Through spawners |
| Swamp hut | Witch, black Cat | The Witch spawns at light 0 as well |
| Monster room | Zombie, Skeleton, Spider | Through a spawner |
Raids also spawn illagers. Pillagers, Vindicators, Evokers and Ravagers all take part, and the Ravager spawns only during raids. Another mob that spawns nowhere naturally is the Vex, which an Evoker summons.
The Nether: Native Mobs and the Rules They Follow
The Nether uses a looser light rule: monsters spawn at light 7 or less. It mixes all three behaviour groups: the Strider is passive, the Piglin neutral and the Ghast hostile. Bedrock moved Nether Endermen, Skeletons and Wither Skeletons to the light-7 rule in 1.19.60.
| Mob | Where it spawns | Condition or note |
|---|---|---|
| Zombified Piglin | Nether wastes, crimson forest, nether fortress | Also arrives in the Overworld through lightning on pigs or a portal |
| Piglin | Nether wastes, crimson forest, bastion remnants | Neutral |
| Piglin Brute | Bastion remnants only | Placed at generation and not renewable |
| Hoglin | Crimson forest, bastion remnants | Any light level |
| Zoglin | Converted from a Hoglin | A Hoglin that spends 15 seconds in the Overworld or End |
| Strider | Lava seas in all five Nether biomes | Passive |
| Ghast | Nether wastes, soul sand valley, basalt deltas | Any light level |
| Blaze | Nether fortress and spawners | Light 11 or less |
| Wither Skeleton | Nether fortress | Light 7 or less |
| Skeleton | Soul sand valley, nether fortress | The same mob as the Overworld one |
| Magma Cube | Nether wastes, basalt deltas, nether fortress | Splits when killed |
| Enderman | Nether wastes, soul sand valley, warped forest | Also found in the Overworld and the End |
The Zombified Piglin is the Nether mob you meet most often in the Overworld, because lightning on a pig and an active Nether portal both produce one. The Zoglin is the reverse: a Hoglin dragged out of the Nether converts after 15 seconds.
The End: Enderman, Shulker, Endermite and the Dragon

The End has the shortest roster of any dimension. Block light must be 0 for a monster to spawn, with the sky-light threshold at 15. The Enderman has 40 health points and also spawns in the Overworld and the Nether.
- Shulker. Found only in end cities, with 30 health points. It drops a shulker shell at a 50% rate in Java, plus 6.25% for each level of Looting.
- Endermite. Never spawns on its own. Throwing an ender pearl has a 5% chance of producing one, and it vanishes after 2 minutes.
- Ender Dragon. Appears on first entry and can be re-summoned with four end crystals. It has 200 health points, and the first kill pays 12,000 XP.
Of the three, only the Dragon is a boss. The other boss, the Wither, is built by the player and can be fought anywhere, which makes it the one mob in the game that has no dimension of its own.
Hardest Hits and Biggest Explosions by Mob

The Warden has the most health of any mob at 500 points, or 250 hearts, and the hardest melee hit at 45 points on Hard. On Bedrock Hard the Wither reaches 600 health points, which is more than the Warden. Damage figures below are in points, and each heart is two points.
| Mob | Attack | Damage in points | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warden | Melee | 16 on Easy, 30 on Normal, 45 on Hard | Hard is 22.5 hearts |
| Warden | Sonic boom | 6, 10 and 15 | Ignores armour and Protection |
| Charged Creeper | Explosion, Java maximum | 43.5, 85 and 127.5 | Bedrock: 35.25, 68.5 and 102.75 |
| Creeper | Explosion, Java maximum | 22.5, 43 and 64.5 | Bedrock: 14.75, 27.5 and 41.25 |
| Wither | Birth explosion, Java maximum | 35.5, 69 and 103.5 | Scales with difficulty |
| Iron Golem | Melee, Normal | 7.5 to 21.5 | Hard: 11.25 to 32.25 |
| Vindicator | Axe, Normal | 13 | Hard: 19.5 |
| Ravager | Melee, Normal | 12 | Hard: 18 |
| Zombie | Melee, Normal | 3 | The baseline for most mobs |
| Skeleton | Melee, Normal | 2 | Melee only; arrows are counted separately |
The explosion figures are proximity maximums, so a creeper that goes off beside a player does the full amount and one three blocks away does far less. Bedrock explosions are weaker across the board.
The Rarest Mobs and Where to Find Them
Rarity in Minecraft is a number, not a feeling, and several mobs have a documented rate.
- Elder Guardian. Exactly 3 per ocean monument, never replaced.
- Piglin Brute. Placed in bastion remnants at generation, and the supply cannot be renewed.
- Blue Axolotl. 1 in 1,200, or 0.083%, when two Axolotls breed.
- Brown Mooshroom. Never natural. Two red Mooshrooms breeding give one at 1 in 1,024.
- Wandering Trader. A daily attempt of 25%, 50% or 75%, multiplied by a 10% roll, for 2.5%, 5% or 7.5%.
- Skeleton Horse. 1.5% to 4% per natural thunderstorm lightning strike on Normal difficulty.
- Wither Skeleton skull. A 2.5% drop, plus 1% per level of Looting in Java.
The Wandering Trader spawns near a player in any biome, and always arrives with two leashed Trader Llamas.
What Despawns and What Stays
A mob that spawns is not guaranteed to survive. With no player within 128 blocks, a mob despawns instantly, and fish do so at 64. Between 32 and 128 blocks it despawns after 30 seconds, with a 1 in 800 chance per tick that works out to about 2.47% per second.
Persistence overrides all of that. In Java a mob stays if it is a passenger, came from a generated structure, has been given an item, or carries a name tag. Shulkers, Withers, Elder Guardians and Ender Dragons never despawn. Since 26.1, name tags can be crafted from 1 paper and any nugget, and librarians no longer sell them.
Leads changed in 26.1 pre-release 2: untamed Cats, Hoglins, Zoglins, Squid, Glow Squid and Dolphins no longer despawn while leashed. In Bedrock, leashing a mob makes it persistent for good. Wardens leave after 1 minute without detecting anything, and Wandering Traders after 40 to 60 minutes. Mods that add new creatures are not part of the 88; the mods worth installing are covered separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
What light level do monsters spawn at in Minecraft?
In the Overworld, block light must be 0, plus a random 0-7 sky roll that has to pass. That rule has applied since Java 1.18. The Nether uses light 7 or less, and the End needs block light 0.
Which dimension has the most mobs?
The Overworld, by a wide margin. The Nether has about ten native mobs and the End has only the Shulker and the Ender Dragon, plus the Enderman and Endermite it shares.
Can you stop mobs from spawning?
Yes. Light up the area so block light is above 0, or set the spawnMonsters game rule, added in Java 1.21.9. Peaceful difficulty also removes hostile mobs, except Hoglins, Piglins, Shulkers and Sulfur Cubes.
Which mobs never despawn in Minecraft?
Shulkers, Withers, Elder Guardians and Ender Dragons never despawn. Any named mob is persistent too, except the Wandering Trader, which leaves even when named.
