Best AAA games on iPhone: App Store icons for Resident Evil 4, Red Dead Redemption, Death Stranding, Hitman, Assassin's Creed Mirage and five more

The best AAA games on iPhone are full console releases, not mobile spin-offs: Resident Evil 4, Death Stranding, Red Dead Redemption and Hitman all install from the App Store and run on the phone itself. Most of them need Apple’s A17 Pro chip or newer, which means an iPhone 15 Pro or any later model. On dedicated hardware the equivalent question is which label you are buying, which our guide to Nintendo Switch 2 games answers.

The ten below are ordered by how much of the console game made it across, what the complete game costs and how many iPhones can run it. Prices are US App Store prices in September 2026. Several of these games are free to download and sell the full game as an in-app purchase, so the Get button rarely shows what you will actually pay. For the hardware those games came from, see our guide to the best gaming consoles.

All 10 AAA iPhone Games at a Glance

Full price is the cost of owning the complete game, not the download. The last column is the oldest hardware or software each listing accepts. Long sessions on these also heat the phone enough to throttle it, which our guide to the best phone cooler for gaming addresses.

1. Resident Evil 4: The Best Console Port on iPhone

Capcom’s 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 is the most complete console game you can put on an iPhone. Leon S. Kennedy’s search for the president’s kidnapped daughter in a rural European village is here in full, with the reworked story and combat that made the remake a hit on consoles, rather than a mobile rework.

The download is free and lets you play the opening, then the Base Game costs $59.99 as an in-app purchase and the Separate Ways side story adds $9.99. Capcom puts the installed game at about 30GB and recommends playing with a controller.

What it does well

  • The full 2023 remake, story and combat intact.
  • A free opening section before you spend anything.
  • Separate Ways available as an add-on.

What to know before buying

  • $59.99 is the highest unlock price on this list.
  • About 30GB of storage once installed.
  • Needs an A17 Pro chip or later.

2. Red Dead Redemption: The Pick for Older iPhones

Rockstar’s western reached iPhone on December 2, 2025, bundled with the Undead Nightmare zombie story and the bonus content from the Game of the Year Edition. John Marston’s hunt for his old gang across the American West and Mexico is the complete single-player game; multiplayer was left out.

It is the only game here with two ways in. The Rockstar version costs $39.99 outright, while Rockstar’s launch announcement confirmed that Netflix members can play the Netflix edition at no extra cost. Rockstar’s listing asks only for iOS 18, and Netflix names the iPhone 11 as the oldest model it supports, so you do not need a Pro phone.

What it does well

  • Undead Nightmare and the Game of the Year extras included.
  • Runs on iPhones several years older than the Pro-only ports.
  • Free for existing Netflix subscribers.

What to know before buying

  • No multiplayer, and no free trial on the $39.99 version.
  • This is the 2010 original, not Red Dead Redemption 2.

3. Death Stranding Director’s Cut: Best for Story and Exploration

Image: 505 Games

Hideo Kojima’s delivery epic casts you as Sam Bridges, hauling cargo across a ruined America to reconnect its last survivors. The iPhone release is the Director’s Cut, with a high frame rate option, a photo mode and crossover content from Valve’s Half-Life and CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, plus the Social Strand System that ties your world to other players’. Phones are not counted as consoles at all, which our list of the best selling consoles of all time explains.

It is a single $39.99 purchase with no trial. Set aside plenty of space: 505 Games says you can start after about 13GB, but the game keeps downloading as you progress, to roughly 50GB in total. iCloud Drive must be switched on to play.

What it does well

  • All the Director’s Cut additions.
  • High frame rate mode and photo mode.
  • Asynchronous online play through the Social Strand System.

What to know before buying

  • Around 50GB of downloads over the course of the game.
  • No trial before the $39.99 purchase.
  • Needs an A17 Pro chip or later.

4. HITMAN World of Assassination: The Most Hours for the Money

IO Interactive brought World of Assassination to iPhone in August 2025, and the studio counts more than 100 hours of content. Agent 47’s contracts run from a Paris palace to the Italian coast, and every location is built to be replayed with a new disguise, route or gadget.

The free download includes the training missions and a Dubai escalation. Part One unlocks six locations for $29.99, and the Full Game, with every location and the roguelike Freelancer mode, costs $69.99. The complete install is about 48GB, and IOI asks for twice that in free space during installation. Controllers work, but mouse and keyboard do not.

What it does well

  • More than 100 hours of content by IOI’s count.
  • Free starter missions to judge performance first.
  • Freelancer mode adds a roguelike campaign.

What to know before buying

  • $69.99 for everything, the most on this list.
  • About 48GB installed, with double that free during setup.
  • Needs iOS 18 and an A17 Pro chip.

5. Assassin’s Creed Mirage: Open-World Action You Can Try Free

Ubisoft’s 2023 return to the series’ stealth roots follows Basim, a street thief who joins the Hidden Ones, through ninth-century Baghdad. It arrived on iPhone in June 2024 as the full game, with the parkour, rooftop chases and social stealth of the console release.

The opening is free to play, and the Full Game Upgrade costs $29.99, which undercuts the other big open-world port here, Red Dead Redemption, by $10. It needs iOS 17.4 and an A17 Pro chip.

What it does well

  • A free opening to test it on your phone.
  • $29.99 for the complete game.
  • A dense city built for parkour and stealth.

What to know before buying

  • Everything past the opening needs the $29.99 upgrade.
  • Needs iOS 17.4 and an A17 Pro chip.

6. Resident Evil Village: First-Person Horror With a Smaller Install

Village was the first of Capcom’s recent Resident Evil ports, released on iPhone on October 30, 2023. Capcom calls it the eighth major installment in the series: a first-person sequel to Resident Evil 7 in which Ethan Winters searches a snowbound European village for his kidnapped daughter.

The free download covers the opening, the Base Game unlocks for $39.99, and a DLC pack costs $19.99. Capcom lists the installed game at about 16GB, around half the size of Resident Evil 4, and again recommends a controller.

What it does well

  • $20 cheaper to unlock than Resident Evil 4.
  • About 16GB installed.
  • A free opening before you pay.

What to know before buying

  • First-person throughout, and Capcom recommends a controller for it.
  • Needs an A17 Pro chip or later.

7. Control Ultimate Edition: The Cheapest Full Port

Remedy’s supernatural shooter drops you into the shifting halls of the Federal Bureau of Control, where telekinesis turns desks, pillars and debris into weapons. The Ultimate Edition includes the base game and both expansions, The Foundation and AWE, and Remedy reworked the aiming, puzzles and interface for touch screens.

At $4.99 it is the cheapest game on this list by a wide margin, and the purchase covers iPhone, iPad and Mac. The catch is the requirement: it needs iOS 26.1 and an A17 Pro chip, and Remedy limits ray tracing to devices with an M3 chip or later, or an A19 Pro with 10GB of memory.

What it does well

  • Both expansions included.
  • $4.99 for the complete edition.
  • One purchase for iPhone, iPad and Mac.

What to know before buying

  • Needs iOS 26.1, newer than any other game here.
  • Ray tracing only on the newest chips.

8. Tomb Raider: Lara Croft’s Origin Story Without a Pro iPhone

Image: Feral Interactive

Feral Interactive’s port of the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot follows a 21-year-old Lara Croft, shipwrecked on the island of Yamatai on her first expedition. Feral calls it the complete adventure, Challenge Tombs included, and it launched on iPhone in February 2026 with support for touch controls, a gamepad, or a mouse and keyboard.

It costs $19.99 with no trial and needs only an A12 Bionic chip and iOS 18, which covers the iPhone XS, XR and every model since. Feral asks for 11GB of free space and recommends double that for installation.

What it does well

  • Runs on iPhones back to the 2018 XS and XR.
  • The complete game with Challenge Tombs.
  • Touch, gamepad or mouse and keyboard.

What to know before buying

  • No free trial.
  • A 2013 game, so it looks older than the Pro-only ports.

9. Civilization VII: The Strategy Pick, via Apple Arcade

Firaxis’s 2025 entry in the Civilization series is on iPhone through Apple Arcade, and 2K describes it as the authentic Civilization VII base game rather than a trimmed mobile edition. You steer an empire through successive ages and pick a new civilization to represent it in each one.

There is no one-off price. It comes with an Apple Arcade subscription at $6.99 a month, which also covers the Mac and iPad versions and the rest of the Arcade catalog. It needs iOS 18 and an A17 Pro chip, and 2K has added mouse and controller support alongside the touch controls.

What it does well

  • The full base game, not a spin-off.
  • No ads or in-app purchases under Apple Arcade.
  • Touch, mouse or controller.

What to know before buying

  • Access ends if you cancel Apple Arcade.
  • Base game only.

10. Alien: Isolation: Horror That Runs on Almost Any iPhone

Creative Assembly’s 2014 survival horror game puts you in the boots of Amanda Ripley, 15 years after her mother vanished, aboard the Sevastopol space station with an alien you cannot kill. Feral’s port has been on the App Store since 2021, which makes it the oldest release here.

The first two missions are free, and a single $14.99 purchase unlocks missions 3 to 19 plus all of the DLC. It needs only iOS 16.5, which Feral says covers the iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X and newer, though it takes 11GB and Feral recommends 22GB free for installation.

What it does well

  • The widest compatibility of any game here.
  • Every DLC pack included in the unlock.
  • Two free missions to start.

What to know before buying

  • The oldest graphics on this list.
  • Needs 22GB free during installation.

Which iPhones Can Run AAA Games?

Seven of the ten games here need Apple’s A17 Pro chip or a later one. On the App Store that covers the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, every iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 model including the 16e and 17e, the iPhone Air, and the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. If you are deciding between the newest two Pro models, our iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max comparison covers what changed.

The standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are left out, because they use the older A16 Bionic chip. Owners of those phones, or anything older, still have three strong games on this list.

  • A17 Pro or later: Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Village, Death Stranding Director’s Cut, HITMAN World of Assassination, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Control Ultimate Edition and Civilization VII.
  • iOS 18, no chip requirement: Red Dead Redemption.
  • A12 Bionic and iOS 18: Tomb Raider.
  • iOS 16.5: Alien: Isolation.

Free Trials, One-Off Prices and Subscriptions

The price on the App Store listing can mislead with these games. Capcom, Ubisoft, IO Interactive and Feral list several of them as free, then sell the complete game inside the app, so the real cost only shows up once you start playing.

  • Free to try, pay to unlock: Resident Evil 4 ($59.99), Resident Evil Village ($39.99), Assassin’s Creed Mirage ($29.99), HITMAN World of Assassination ($29.99 or $69.99) and Alien: Isolation ($14.99).
  • Paid upfront: Red Dead Redemption ($39.99), Death Stranding Director’s Cut ($39.99), Tomb Raider ($19.99) and Control Ultimate Edition ($4.99).
  • Subscription: Civilization VII through Apple Arcade, and the Netflix edition of Red Dead Redemption.

The free trials are worth using. They are the only way to check how a game runs on your particular phone before paying, and App Store prices on these ports change during sales.

Storage and Controllers for Console Ports

The size shown on an App Store listing is usually just the first download. Resident Evil 4 is listed at well under 1GB, yet Capcom says the installed game takes about 30GB, because the rest arrives after you open it.

  • Death Stranding Director’s Cut: about 13GB to start, roughly 50GB in total.
  • HITMAN World of Assassination: about 48GB, with twice that free during installation.
  • Resident Evil 4: about 30GB.
  • Resident Evil Village: about 16GB.
  • Tomb Raider and Alien: Isolation: 11GB each, with about double that free to install.

Every game here has touch controls, but Capcom recommends a controller for its Resident Evil ports and Hitman supports one. Apple’s guide to connecting a wireless game controller covers Xbox, PlayStation and other Bluetooth pads. If you would rather have sticks built in, our guide to the best gaming handhelds compares dedicated devices.

More Console Ports on the App Store

These did not make the top ten, but each is a full console or PC game on the US App Store.

The Best AAA Games on iPhone to Buy First

With an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, start with Resident Evil 4. Its free opening shows whether your phone and your thumbs are up to a console game before you spend $59.99. If horror is not your thing, Hitman’s free starter missions do the same job, and Control at $4.99 is the lowest-risk full game on the list.

On an older iPhone, Red Dead Redemption is the answer, and it costs nothing extra if you already pay for Netflix. Tomb Raider and Alien: Isolation fill in behind it, and both run on phones several generations old.

Civilization VII is available through Apple Arcade.

Can the iPhone 15 run AAA games?

The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max can run everything on this list. The standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus use the A16 Bionic chip, so they cannot run the A17 Pro games, but they can run Red Dead Redemption, Tomb Raider, Alien: Isolation, GRID Legends and Hitman: Absolution.

Are AAA games on iPhone free?

Some are free to start. Resident Evil 4, Village, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Hitman and Alien: Isolation let you play an opening section before asking you to buy the full game, Netflix members get Red Dead Redemption at no extra cost, and Civilization VII is included with Apple Arcade. Otherwise the complete games cost between $4.99 and $69.99.

Can you use a controller for AAA games on iPhone?

Yes. iPhones pair with Xbox, PlayStation and other Bluetooth controllers, and Capcom recommends one for its Resident Evil ports. Hitman supports controllers but not a mouse and keyboard, while Tomb Raider accepts touch, a gamepad or a mouse and keyboard.
