The fastest way to use Minecraft potion recipes is to pick the trip first and the potion second. A Nether run needs Fire Resistance and Regeneration, a raid needs Healing and Strength, and an ocean monument needs Water Breathing and Night Vision, and each is one or two brewing stages away from a water bottle.
This guide works as of 5 November 2026 for Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.6x. It starts with a shopping list, then gives a recipe path for every situation, with the exact length of each potion and the point where Java and Bedrock differ.
Minecraft Potion Recipes Shopping List: What to Collect First

Almost every recipe begins the same way: a water bottle, then nether wart to make an awkward potion, then one ingredient. Weakness is the only exception, because it needs no nether wart. Collect from this table before you build anything.
| Ingredient | Where to get it | What it makes |
|---|---|---|
| Nether wart | Soul sand gardens in nether fortresses; bastion remnant courtyards | Every awkward potion |
| Blaze rod | Blazes in nether fortresses; it crafts two blaze powder | Fuel, and Strength |
| Magma cream | Magma cubes, or blaze powder plus a slimeball | Fire Resistance |
| Ghast tear | Ghasts, 0-1 per kill | Regeneration |
| Sugar | Crafted from sugar cane | Swiftness |
| Glistering melon slice | A melon slice surrounded by eight gold nuggets | Healing |
| Spider eye | Spiders, cave spiders and witches | Poison, and fermented spider eye |
| Golden carrot | A carrot surrounded by eight gold nuggets | Night Vision |
| Pufferfish | Killing one, fishing, or a bucket | Water Breathing |
| Rabbit’s foot | Rabbits, 10% drop | Leaping |
| Phantom membrane | Phantoms | Slow Falling |
| Turtle shell | Five turtle scutes craft the helmet | Turtle Master |
| Redstone dust | Redstone ore; witches | Longer duration |
| Glowstone dust | Glowstone in the Nether, 2-4 per block; witches | Level II |
| Gunpowder | Creepers, ghasts, witches | Splash form |
| Dragon’s breath | A glass bottle on the ender dragon’s breath cloud | Lingering form |
The Nether is the heavy lift: wart, blaze rods, ghast tears and magma cream all live there. Fermented spider eye, which you need for four potions, is a crafted item: spider eye, brown mushroom and sugar. None of it needs a mod, but the Minecraft mods worth installing are there if you want recipes beyond vanilla.
Nether and Fire Survival Recipes

Fire Resistance is the one potion worth carrying every time you cross the portal. It gives immunity to fire, lava, magma blocks, campfires and blaze fireballs, and the extended version lasts 8:00. Piglins can also barter one, at roughly a 1.7% chance per trade.
| Recipe path | Result | Upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Awkward + magma cream | Fire Resistance 3:00 | 8:00 with redstone; no Level II |
| Awkward + ghast tear | Regeneration 0:45 | 1:30 Java or 2:00 Bedrock with redstone; II is 0:22 |
| Awkward + glistering melon slice | Healing, 4 HP | Healing II with glowstone, 8 HP |
| Awkward + sugar | Swiftness 3:00 | 8:00 with redstone; II is 1:30 |
Pair Fire Resistance with Regeneration for a fortress raid, since ghasts and blazes hit from range and Regeneration heals 1 HP every 2.5 seconds. Healing II restores 8 HP (4 hearts) instantly when the health bar drops too fast for anything else to help.
Regeneration and Poison are the two potions whose extended length differs by edition. A Bedrock player gets 2:00 where a Java player gets 1:30, so a Bedrock batch stretches further for the same redstone.
Set Up the Brewing Stand Once
A brewing stand is one blaze rod in the middle with three cobblestone, blackstone or cobbled deepslate blocks across the bottom. Blaze powder goes in the fuel slot, holds 20 charges, and every 20-second stage spends one charge no matter how many bottles are inside.
- Extended potion: nether wart, ingredient, redstone. That is three stages.
- Splash: add gunpowder for a fourth stage.
- Lingering: add dragon’s breath to the splash potion for a fifth.
- Per blaze powder: six batches of extended potions (18 bottles), five splash batches (15) or four lingering batches (12).
Feed three bottles per batch, never one, because fuel is spent per stage rather than per bottle. A hopper above the stand takes ingredients, one at the side takes bottles and fuel, and one underneath pulls the finished potions out, which makes a batch worth walking away from. The game has no recipe book for brewing, so the paths in this guide are the reference.
Combat and Raid Recipes: Strength, Splash Healing and Slowness
A raid throws pillagers, vindicators, ravagers and evokers at you at once, so build around burst healing and damage rather than long buffs. Brew these as splash potions, because a thrown potion heals or harms a group and lasts as long as a drinkable one.
| Recipe path | Result | Upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Awkward + blaze powder | Strength 3:00, +3 melee damage in Java | 8:00 with redstone; II is 1:30 and +6 |
| Awkward + spider eye | Poison 0:45, never kills | 1:30 Java or 2:00 Bedrock; II is 0:21 Java or 0:22 Bedrock |
| Water bottle + fermented spider eye | Weakness 1:30, -4 melee damage in Java | 4:00 with redstone; no Level II |
| Healing or Poison + fermented spider eye | Harming, 6 HP | Harming II with glowstone, 12 HP |
| Swiftness or Leaping + fermented spider eye | Slowness 1:30, -15% speed | 4:00 with redstone; Slowness IV is 0:20 |
Strength II adds +6 melee damage in Java, where Strength I adds +3. Bedrock states Strength and Weakness as percentages instead. Slowness IV needs glowstone on a plain Slowness potion, because enhanced Swiftness and enhanced Leaping cannot be corrupted at all.
Healing and Harming flip on undead mobs: a splash potion of Healing damages zombies and skeletons, and Harming heals them. Undead mobs also ignore Poison and Regeneration. A thrown Weakness potion combined with a golden apple is also how a zombie villager is turned back into a villager.
Boss Fight Loadouts for the Ender Dragon and the Wither
The Ender Dragon and the Wither are the game’s two bosses, and one kit serves both. Carry something to heal, something to hit harder, and something to survive a fall or a fire.
- Healing II (splash): 8 HP (4 hearts) the moment you throw it, with no duration to wait out.
- Strength II: 1:30 of +6 melee damage in Java. Drink it as the fight begins, because the timer runs even when you are not hitting.
- Regeneration II: 0:22 of 1 HP every 1.25 seconds, so it covers a short burst rather than a whole fight.
- Slow Falling: 1:30 base or 4:00 extended, and it negates fall damage if you are knocked off a platform.
- Fire Resistance, 8:00 extended: keeps lava and fire from ending a run that otherwise went well.
Never throw Harming at an undead target expecting damage. It heals them. If you want to bring a lingering potion to the dragon fight, dragon’s breath comes from the same boss: use an empty glass bottle on its breath cloud while it perches.
Deep Water, Dark Caves and Long Digs

Exploration potions are the long-duration ones, so extend them. Water Breathing at 8:00 stops the oxygen bar draining for a whole deep-ocean dive, and Night Vision at 8:00 puts everything at light level 15, underwater included.
| Recipe path | Result | Upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Awkward + pufferfish | Water Breathing 3:00 | 8:00 with redstone |
| Awkward + golden carrot | Night Vision 3:00 | 8:00 with redstone |
| Awkward + turtle shell | Turtle Master 0:20 | 0:40 with redstone; II is 0:20 |
| Awkward + phantom membrane | Slow Falling 1:30 | 4:00 with redstone |
| Awkward + rabbit’s foot | Leaping 3:00, +50% jump | 8:00 with redstone; II is 1:30, +150% |
| Night Vision + fermented spider eye | Invisibility 3:00 | 8:00 from extended Night Vision |

Turtle Master is the odd one. It combines Slowness IV and Resistance III for -60% speed and -60% damage taken, and the enhanced version goes to Slowness VI and Resistance IV, which is -90% speed and -80% damage taken. Its base is only 0:20, so it suits a single hold-the-line moment, not travel.
Invisibility hides your body but not held items or armour, and in Java 1.21.6 it also hides you from the locator bar. A wandering trader sells an extended one for 5 emeralds if you would rather skip the brewing step. If you want other worlds to explore with a kit like this, the best open world games are a good start.
Trial Chambers Potions as Mob Effects
Four potions added with Trial Chambers on 13 June 2024 work best thrown at mobs rather than drunk. Each lasts 3:00 and none can be extended or enhanced.
| Recipe path | Potion | What it does to the target |
|---|---|---|
| Awkward + slime block | Oozing | Two medium slimes spawn when the target dies |
| Awkward + cobweb | Weaving | 2-3 cobwebs spawn on death, and webs slow it less |
| Awkward + stone | Infestation | 10% chance of silverfish whenever it is hit |
| Awkward + breeze rod | Wind Charging | A wind burst goes off when it dies |
Slimes are immune to Oozing and silverfish are immune to Infested. Each has a matching tipped arrow, which makes them useful from range. A fifth, Freezing, is upcoming rather than live: it is part of Fourth Drop 2026, Java 26.4 and Bedrock 26.70, and only appears today in snapshots and experimental builds.
The Fermented Spider Eye Chain, Step by Step
Fermented spider eye turns a potion into its opposite, and the whole chain is short enough to read in one list.
- Water bottle, then fermented spider eye, gives Weakness.
- Healing, then fermented spider eye, gives Harming.
- Poison, then fermented spider eye, gives Harming too. It does not give Regeneration.
- Swiftness or Leaping, then fermented spider eye, gives Slowness.
- Night Vision, then fermented spider eye, gives Invisibility.
- Bedrock only: an Awkward, Mundane, Thick or Strength potion gives Weakness.
Nothing happens to Fire Resistance, Regeneration, Water Breathing, Slow Falling, Turtle Master or the four Trial Chambers potions. Three potions cannot be brewed at all: Luck in Java, Decay in Bedrock and the Java uncraftable potion. They come only from commands or the Creative menu, and the Minecraft commands list covers the syntax. Four cure potions (Antidote, Elixir, Eye drops and Tonic) are brewed from an awkward potion with Minecraft Education features switched on, and they cannot be made splash, lingering, extended or enhanced.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest Minecraft potion to make?
Swiftness is the easiest awkward-potion recipe: nether wart plus sugar, and sugar comes from sugar cane on the surface. Weakness is easier still, because it skips nether wart entirely and needs only a fermented spider eye on a water bottle.
Which Minecraft potion should I brew first?
Fire Resistance. Magma cream drops from magma cubes in the Nether, the potion lasts 8:00 extended, and it removes the most common way a first Nether trip ends.
Do potion recipes differ between Java and Bedrock?
Slightly. Extended Regeneration and Poison run 2:00 in Bedrock and 1:30 in Java, and Poison II runs 0:22 against 0:21. Bedrock also lets Mundane, Thick and Strength potions become Weakness.
Is the Potion of Freezing in Minecraft yet?
No. It arrives with Fourth Drop 2026, which is Java 26.4 and Bedrock 26.70, due in Q4 2026. Until then it exists only in snapshots and behind an experimental toggle.
