PlayStation 6 is the console Sony has not yet announced. What exists in public is a research partnership with AMD, a chief executive saying launch timing and price are undecided, a Bloomberg report of a possible delay to 2028 or 2029, and a stack of leaked specifications for a console and a handheld. Each of those deserves a different level of trust.
This explainer sorts them in that order, from what Sony has said on the record to what has only leaked, then covers what the uncertainty means if you are deciding whether to buy a PS5 now.
The Quick Answer on PlayStation 6
In short: Sony has not named, dated or priced PlayStation 6. It has confirmed Project Amethyst, shared graphics research with AMD aimed at a future console. Its chief executive says launch timing depends on memory prices, which he expects to stay high into 2028. Everything beyond that is reported or leaked.
Confirmed, Reported or Leaked: Sorting the PlayStation 6 Claims
What Sony has confirmed
- Project Amethyst, announced with AMD on 9 October 2025, covering machine learning, ray tracing and compression technologies for “a future console in a few years”.
- That launch timing and pricing are undecided, said by chief executive Hiroki Totoki at the May 2026 earnings briefing.
- That memory prices are expected to stay very high through fiscal year 2027, which ends in March 2028.
What has been reported
- Bloomberg, February 2026: Sony is considering pushing the next PlayStation to 2028 or even 2029 because of memory costs.
- Reuters, 2024: Sony chose AMD to supply the chip for its next console.
- The Wall Street Journal, 2026: Totoki repeated that no date or price has been set.
What has only leaked
- A home console codenamed Orion and a handheld codenamed Canis.
- Zen 6 processors and RDNA 5 graphics in both.
- Support for PS5 and PS4 games, from a planning document the leaker called several years old.
Project Amethyst: The PlayStation 6 Groundwork Sony Has Shown
Sony introduced Project Amethyst in a video on the PlayStation YouTube channel featuring Mark Cerny, lead architect of the PS5 and PS5 Pro, and AMD's Jack Huynh. Cerny also led the design of the PS4, as his Wikipedia biography notes, so he has now shaped two PlayStation generations in a row. He described three technologies in plain terms.
- Neural Arrays link groups of GPU compute units so they can work on one machine learning job together, which suits tasks such as upscaling a lower resolution image to 4K.
- Radiance Cores are dedicated hardware for ray tracing and path tracing, taking that work off the general shader units.
- Universal Compression compresses more kinds of graphics data than today's colour-only schemes, so the same memory bandwidth carries more detail.
Cerny said the three only existed in simulation. One piece of the partnership has reached players, though: an upgraded version of PSSR, Sony's machine learning upscaler, which arrived on PS5 Pro with Resident Evil Requiem on 27 February 2026 and spread to other games through a system update.

PlayStation 6 Release Window and the Memory Squeeze
Sony's console generations have followed a fairly steady rhythm, which is why late 2027 became the default guess before the memory shortage hit.
| Console | Launch year | Gap from previous |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation | 1994 | n/a |
| PlayStation 2 | 2000 | 6 years |
| PlayStation 3 | 2006 | 6 years |
| PlayStation 4 | 2013 | 7 years |
| PlayStation 5 | 2020 | 7 years |
| PlayStation 6 | Not announced | 7 years would mean 2027 |
The shortage changed the calculation. Memory makers are selling large volumes to companies building artificial intelligence data centers, and consumer electronics firms are competing for what remains. Totoki said Sony has enough components for its 2026 hardware plans but that next-generation timing depends on whether memory prices stay high through fiscal 2027. Bloomberg's report of a 2028 or 2029 launch fits that reasoning, although Sony did not comment on it.
How Sony Revealed the PS5, and What to Watch For This Time
The PS5 offers a template for how a PlayStation announcement unfolds, and it started well before launch. Mark Cerny first described the console in a Wired interview in April 2019, about 19 months before it went on sale.
- April 2019: Cerny outlines the next console's processor and fast SSD to Wired, without a name or a date.
- October 2019: a second Wired interview confirms the PlayStation 5 name and a target of the end of 2020.
- 16 September 2020: Sony confirms the price and the release date at a game showcase.
- 12 November 2020: PS5 launches in North America, Japan and several other regions.
By that measure, the first official technical details of PlayStation 6 would be expected well over a year before it ships. Project Amethyst does not count, because Sony presented it as research rather than a product. The mid-generation pattern points the same way: the PS4 Pro arrived in November 2016, four years before the PS5, and the PS5 Pro followed in November 2024.
What the Orion and Canis Leaks Describe
Two codenames appear in the leaked material. Treat both as plans that may change rather than finished products.
- Orion, the home console: an eight-core Zen 6 CPU, an RDNA 5 GPU with about 52 to 54 compute units, around 160 watts of board power and a chip reportedly made on a 3nm process. Memory is the open question: one leaker cites 30GB of GDDR7, while a later report suggests 24GB to control cost.
- Canis, the handheld: four smaller Zen 6c cores, an RDNA 5 GPU with 12 to 20 compute units, LPDDR5X memory and about 15 watts of power, which would let it run games locally on battery.
A handheld would be a new kind of PlayStation for this era. The current PlayStation Portal only streams games from a PS5 or the cloud. If you want something portable now, our guide to the best gaming handhelds covers the devices that run games themselves.
How PlayStation 6 Pricing Could Land
There is no price, but Sony's recent moves show the pressure on one. Its price change announcement raised every PS5 model from 2 April 2026, and the US list prices now look like this:
- PS5 Digital Edition: $599.99.
- PS5 with disc drive: $649.99.
- PS5 Pro: $899.99, up from $699.99 at its November 2024 launch.
- PlayStation Portal: $249.99.

A console that launches while memory is expensive would have to pass at least some of that cost on, which is why outside estimates now stretch from about $500 to four figures. Totoki has also said Sony is considering changes to its business model, though he did not describe them.
Your PS5 Library and PlayStation 6
Sony has not said whether PlayStation 6 will play PS5 games. The leaked claim that it will is plausible, because staying with AMD keeps the underlying architecture familiar, and because the PS5 itself plays almost every PS4 game. Digital purchases made up 82 percent of PS4 and PS5 software sold in the April to June 2026 quarter, so a large share of players have libraries tied to their account.
The PS5 is the precedent worth knowing. Shortly after its September 2020 showcase, then Sony Interactive Entertainment chief executive Jim Ryan said the console would run 99 percent of the PS4 games Sony had tested, up from an earlier promise covering only the 100 most played. Older generations work differently: PS3, PS2 and original PlayStation games reach PS5 through the PlayStation Plus Premium classics catalogue rather than from their discs, which is a reasonable guess at how PlayStation 6 would treat PS4-era titles if native support stopped at the PS5.

Buying a PS5 in the Meantime
On the evidence so far, PlayStation 6 is at least a year away and possibly three. The PS5 has shipped 95.3 million units as of June 2026, and its biggest game of the year, Grand Theft Auto VI, is due on 19 November 2026.
- New to PlayStation: a PS5 now gives you this generation's library, much of which should carry forward if backward compatibility arrives as leaked.
- Already own a PS5: keep it. Nothing announced so far makes it obsolete.
- Comparing systems: our breakdown of the best gaming consoles weighs PS5 against Xbox and Switch 2, and the list of best selling consoles of all time shows where PS5 already sits historically.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is PlayStation 6 officially confirmed?
Not by name. Sony has confirmed Project Amethyst, its research partnership with AMD for a future console, but has not announced, shown or priced PlayStation 6.
Why might PlayStation 6 be delayed?
Memory chips. Demand from artificial intelligence data centers has pushed memory prices up, and Sony says its launch timing depends on whether they stay high through fiscal 2027.
Will there be a PlayStation 6 handheld?
Leaks describe one, codenamed Canis, that would run games locally. Sony has not confirmed it. The PlayStation Portal it sells today is a streaming device.
Should I wait for PlayStation 6 instead of buying a PS5?
Only if you can wait a year or more. No launch date exists, and a PS5 bought now will play the major releases due before any successor arrives.
